Honoring World AIDS day

To mark World AIDS Day 2011 (December 1), a redesigned AIDSinfo Web site has been released, along with the Spanish-language infoSIDA

The sister sites offer federally-approved information on HIV treatment and research to health care providers, researchers, people affected by HIV/AIDS and the public. Resources include medical practice guidelines, treatment and prevention research studies, educational materials for consumers, and information on approved and investigational HIV/AIDS-related drugs.

Information is available in both English and Spanish. AIDSinfo and infoSIDA are services of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), managed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). NLM is the world’s largest medical library and a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Clinical Trial for IPF interrupted

NIH stops one treatment arm of trial; other two treatments to continue

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, has stopped one arm of a three arm multi-center, clinical trial studying treatments for the lung-scarring disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) for safety concerns. The trial found that people with IPF receiving a currently used triple-drug therapy consisting of prednisone, azathioprine, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) had worse outcomes than those who received placebos or inactive substances.

More information is found at the NIH_News page and Clinical_Trials.gov.

Discover your Library!

Have you used the library’s Discover tool?   Like other catalogs, it can  find books, journals and their electronic equivalent.   It can also  find required course books  by searching with the name of the course director or course number.      Look on the Library Home page and each of the Student Community pages for this catalog.

Once inside Discover, you will notice that there are more ways to use this resource.

From the article page, you can narrow your search by age or gender of the study subjects,   vocabulary  (thesaurus terms), publication types or journal titles.  Not finding what you need?  Link out to the Library’s Database page.

The catalog page also offers  ways to narrow your book searches,  including format (electronic or print), publication date, library location, course or professor’s name and additional search words.

Our goal is to make your library experiences seamless and simple.  If you do encounter a problem or have a question, contact a staff person at your local campus library.  We are here to help you.

New school year = Improved Online Library

Welcome to the new school year.

The library staff has been busy for the last few months making the library’s pages  easier for you to use.

The Search Catalog  has been updated and improved – it also searches eBook titles.   In addition, the library also has a Discovery tool that searches print and eBook titles and book titles by professor’s name or class number. (See your Community Pages  and/or the Library  Home Page. )

Have you looked at the database page?  It now includes 4 different ‘Access’ integrated products, (Access Surgery, Pharmacy, Medicine and Anesthesiology)    that will provide you with complete and updated  eBook content,  images and illustrations and  interactive self-assessment.

Even the off-campus access username and password has changed!  Use your school email name (Mary.Lamb or John.Public) and school email password to use these resources.

This is just a few of our recent changes.  The library staff is still available  to help you via phone, email or Service Desk interaction.   All you have to do is ask.

Happy searching to you!

No, it is the same PubMed; the front page of the database has recently been tweaked.

An X now marks the spot where the Clear button used to be.   Links are moved from above to below the search box.  Advanced Search is now only Advanced.

More information is available in the July-August issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin,  PubMed_MeSH_&_NLM_Catalog_Search_Boxes_Modified.

PubMed’s Clinical Queries homepage is also different.  The changes provide a more straightforward understanding of how to enter a search in one of the its three categories: Clinical Studies, Systematic Reviews or Medical Genetics.

Read more about the change in the July-August issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin,  PubMed_Clinical_Queries_page_updated.

Having EndNote Web trouble?

EndNote Web has recently been updated to increase your user satisfaction.  Unfortunately, your off-campus abilities may also have been lost. You will notice a few differences, as a loss of style guides available in EN Web- Cite While You Write.

There is an easy fix to the problem.    Just  access your EN Web account on the library’s computers.    (In other words, just log into your account.)  Pretty simple.

If you also want to check your EndNote Web account status, open the Options >Account Information tab.

If you have questions on this or other library-related situations, contact your local campus librarians for assistance.
